About Course

Artificial intelligence is changing how asset managers and hedge funds research investments, construct portfolios, execute trades and monitor risk. This course provides a clear, practical introduction to these applications, examining how AI fits into institutional investment processes and where its limitations require careful professional judgement.

Across eight lessons, you will explore investment data, machine learning methods, algorithmic execution, portfolio construction, risk management and governance. The course explains how models are developed, tested and monitored, with particular attention to data quality, misleading backtests, transaction costs, liquidity and changing market conditions.

Building on the themes explored in AI in Financial Data Analysis and Market Intelligence and AI for Financial Forecasting and Economic Modelling, this course examines how information and forecasts become investment decisions. It distinguishes operational efficiency from investment performance, explaining why faster analysis and more sophisticated technology do not automatically produce stronger returns.

You will also examine generative AI, foundation models and AI agents that can connect research, analytical tools and operational workflows. These capabilities are considered alongside practical responsibilities involving confidentiality, permissions, independent validation, human oversight and accountability. Regulatory issues are discussed within their relevant context, recognising that requirements differ between jurisdictions and investment activities.
