Almost every week brings another headline about AI and jobs. One predicts mass unemployment, while another claims that only a handful of careers will survive. Social media and YouTube are full of sensational thumbnails showing robots sitting behind office desks, countdowns to the “end of work” and lists of jobs you can supposedly write off today. The scarier the headline, the more clicks it often attracts.

At the other end of the spectrum are equally optimistic predictions that AI will create millions of entirely new careers, unlock unprecedented economic growth and usher in a new era of prosperity. With so many conflicting stories, it has become increasingly difficult to separate fact from speculation. But will AI job forecasts come true?

The views expressed in this article are simply our opinion, based on published research, current evidence and the developments we monitor every day as administrators of more than 110 AI courses. The reality is that AI is being developed for countless applications, from healthcare and scientific research to education, engineering and manufacturing. It has the potential to transform lives for the better. Many countries are already struggling with shortages of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. AI is helping clinicians diagnose diseases more quickly, accelerating the discovery of new drugs, supporting medical research and assisting healthcare teams with increasingly complex workloads. AI is also allowing healthcare professionals to spend less time on administration and more time caring for patients. Hopefully, one day, AI will contribute towards breakthroughs against diseases that have challenged medical science for generations.

While employment often dominates the headlines, we should never lose sight of the enormous opportunities AI presents. However, it would also be naïve to ignore AI’s impact on the workplace.

One of the biggest commercial drivers behind AI investment is improving productivity and reducing operating costs. Businesses do not spend millions implementing new technology unless they expect a return on that investment. That return often comes through completing more work with fewer resources, automating repetitive tasks and allowing employees to focus on higher-value activities.

Few companies openly advertise AI as a replacement for employees, but the direction of travel is becoming increasingly clear. The Big Four accountancy firms have openly demonstrated how AI is transforming elements of audit, tax, compliance and advisory work. Banks, insurers, legal practices and professional services firms are all investing heavily in AI to automate routine processes, streamline workflows and improve efficiency.

We are also seeing a change in thinking inside boardrooms. Before approving new recruitment, many business leaders are increasingly asking a simple question:

Can AI do this job first?

The growing number of AI products marketed as virtual receptionists, customer service agents, secretaries and administrative assistants that work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, never take holidays and never call in sick demonstrates how AI is increasingly being positioned as an alternative to at least some routine office roles.

That does not necessarily mean existing employees are immediately made redundant. In many cases, the impact is far more gradual. Organisations may recruit fewer graduates, leave vacancies unfilled or choose not to replace employees who retire or move on. These changes rarely make national headlines, but over time they have the potential to reshape the workforce.

Against this backdrop, it has never been more important to understand AI and how it is changing the workplace. It is equally important for students and those considering a career to monitor developments within their chosen profession before committing several years to study. Career paths that appeared secure only a few years ago may evolve considerably over the next decade, while entirely new opportunities are likely to emerge.

What Do The Forecasts Say?

This is where the debate becomes particularly interesting.

Perhaps the most widely quoted report comes from the World Economic Forum. It predicts that by 2030 around 170 million new jobs will be created globally while approximately 92 million existing roles are displaced, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs.

Where will those new jobs come from, and are we beginning to see evidence of them today?

Other forecasts paint a very different picture. Some AI leaders have warned that a substantial proportion of entry-level white-collar jobs could disappear over the next five years as AI becomes increasingly capable of performing routine knowledge work.

It is hardly surprising that many people are left wondering which prediction, if either, will prove correct.

What Has Actually Happened?

Looking purely at the evidence available today, neither extreme appears to have become reality. We have not seen the AI-driven mass unemployment that many feared during 2025, but neither have we witnessed the huge wave of new AI-related careers that some forecasts appeared to promise. Instead, the evidence points towards a period of gradual change rather than dramatic disruption.

Research increasingly suggests that AI is changing recruitment patterns, particularly for entry-level professional roles. Many employers now expect graduates to arrive with stronger skills because AI is already carrying out many of the routine tasks that junior employees once performed. Businesses are redesigning roles around higher-value work instead of simply replacing people outright. Perhaps the biggest mistake is assuming that AI will transform the labour market through one dramatic event. The evidence so far suggests it is far more likely to reshape employment through thousands of small decisions made by employers every day.

Where Are The New Jobs?

The World Economic Forum’s forecasts extend to 2030, so it would be unrealistic to expect all of those new jobs to have appeared already. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to ask where they are beginning to emerge. Demand for AI engineers, AI governance professionals, cyber security specialists, machine learning experts and data scientists is undoubtedly growing. The question is whether these opportunities will develop quickly enough to offset the gradual reduction in more traditional office roles. At present, nobody can answer that with confidence.

The Slow Erosion Of Employment

When people think about AI replacing jobs, they often imagine thousands of employees leaving office buildings carrying cardboard boxes. The reality may be far quieter.

A business that once recruited twenty graduates each year may now recruit fifteen. Retiring employees may not be replaced because AI has absorbed part of their workload, while routine administration continues to become increasingly automated. Individually these decisions appear relatively insignificant. Collectively, over five or ten years, they could fundamentally reshape employment across many industries. That is why unemployment figures alone may not tell the whole story.

The Geography Question

We have discussed this topic in previous blogs, so there is no need to repeat it in detail here. Even if AI creates millions of new jobs globally, there is no guarantee those jobs will be created in the same countries where existing roles are being transformed. For individual economies, where those jobs are ultimately located may prove just as important as how many are created.

A Challenge For Governments

Governments understandably focus on unemployment statistics, but unemployment may not be the first warning sign. If organisations gradually recruit fewer people because AI enables existing employees to become more productive, the impact may first be felt through slower income tax growth, weaker consumer spending and changing demand for housing long before unemployment rises significantly. These are questions governments should begin considering now rather than waiting until the effects become visible in employment statistics.
